Welcome!  If this is your first visit to our blog, please read our Intro post here.  To date we have written posts about all known members of the first, second, and third generations of descendants of William Loney of Co Longford, Ireland, their spouses, and their spouses’ families.

If you are looking for information on someone in particular, you can use the “Search” feature in the upper right hand corner of this page.

We hope that the information you find here will be helpful to you in your genealogical research, lead you to an “aha” moment, or help you find a missing ancestor or branch of your family tree.  And, we have loved hearing from everyone who has contacted us.

While we make every effort to ensure that what we post is accurate (based on source documents or “reliable” family information), we would be silly to think that we haven’t made any mistakes.  If you run across one, please, please, please let us know so we can correct it.

If you are planning a trip to Ireland, visit our section on What to do in Ireland.  It provides a brief overview of where you might go and what you might do if you are interested in genealogical research on the Loney Family.

Back in 2018, we wrote a post about Flora McGill and her family. Flora was the wife of Thomas Henry McKee.

We recently came across the gravestones for Flora and Thomas and for Flora’s parents, Archibald McGill and Jane Bell.

Flora and Thomas are buried together in Union Cemetery, Grand Valley, Dufferin Co, Ontario.

Archibald and Jane are buried together in The Grove Cemetery, East Garafraxa, Dufferin Co.  We think the gravestone looks especially striking with the background of autumn leaves.

In last week’s post, we shared a little information about George Grant Blackstock, the husband of Edith May Loney.

Today we’ll be writing about George and Edith’s only know daughter Lois Blackstock.  The only record we have for Lois is the 1916 Canadian Census of the Prairie Provinces.  She was one year old.

Online family trees show that Lois (middle name Nadine or Katrine) married Herbert Charles Dobbs.

We believe Herbert was born in 1915.  He died 15, Oct, 1969 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.  His gravestone indicates he was in the Royal Canadian Air Force.

The “C D” may be the Canadian Forces Decoration that is awarded to officers and Non-Commissioned Members of the Canadian Forces who have completed twelve years of service and who have a good record of conduct.

We believe Lois (Blackstock) Dobbs died in 1984 in Pense, Saskatchewan and may also be buried in Woodland Cemetery.

If you have records verifying any of the above information or additional information about Lois Blackstock and Herbert Charles Dobbs, we’d love to hear from you.

Way back in 2013, we wrote a post about Edith May Loney and her husband, George Grant Blackstock

At the time, records for the couple were allusive and, for the most part, that has not changed.  We did, however, find George’s Find a Grave record.  Although he died in Saanich, Victoria, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, he is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

The Find a Grave record provides the names of George’s parents – Wesley Grant Blackstock and Alice Gilrie. This matches with an Ahnentafel file we found for the “Blackstocks of Castleraghan, Caven Co, Ireland”. For those wishing to research this family further, you can find it here.

The Find a Grave record also indicates that George had been a land agent which matches with his 1916 Attestation Paper which said he was working as a real estate broker.

As we mentioned in our original post, George and Edith had a daughter, Lois, who was born in 1915 or 1916. In our next post we’ll be writing what we know about Lois and her husband, Herbert Charles Dobbs.

A couple of week’s ago, we wrote about E. Clifford Berry and his wives, Helen F. McCormick and June Armstrong.  Last week we shared some additional information about Helen’s family and this week we will do the same for June’s.

June was born about 1915, possibly 11 May and was the daughter of Frederick Vivon Armstrong and Mary Katherine/Mary Kate/Katherine Mary Lay.

Frederick was born on 1 April, 1885 in Bismarck, Burleigh, Dakota Territory, the son of W M Armstrong  and Marie Dockstedy/Docksteder.

Mary Kate was born 1890 in Georgia (probably in Sugar Valley, Gordon Co), the daughter of Granville Hunt Lay and Sarah Hall.

In the 1910 census, Frederick is listed in Elk Township, Spokane Co, north of Spokane.  His occupation is laborer odd jobs.

Frederick and Mary Kate were married on 4 Aug, 1914 in Spokane, WA.  At the time of their marriage, Frederick was living in Hillyard and working as a poultryman. Hillyard, now a neighborhood in Spokane, was a separate town between 1892 and 1924. Katherine was living at E 3226 Riverside Ave in Spokane.

Note in their Marriage Record below, we also see that Mary Kate’s brother, Dave M Lay married Maud Hughett on the same day and the couples served as witnesses for each other.

The next record we have for Frederick is his WWI Registration Card.  It shows him working as a City Salesman for the Fairmont Grocery Co at 120 W Pacific in Spokane.

Mary Kate is listed as Kate Mabel at 1508 E 15th in Spokane.

The card indicates that Frederick is of medium height and build, with brown hair and brown eyes.

In the 1920 census, Frederick was working as a salesman in a creamery.  He and Mary Kate are living at 1203 Thirteenth in Spokane with their two children, June S and Robert Frederick.

1203 Thirteenth

The house was built in 1909. The Property Overview on Realtor.com describes it as “The house you wish you’d grown up in!”

By the 1930 census, Frederick and Mary Kate have added two more children to their family, Daniel and Ramon. The family is living at 518 W Alice.

518 W Alice

Frederick had made a career change and was working as a drugless physician.

In the 1940 census, Frederick and Mary Kate are still on Alice St, with sons Robert, Daniel, and Ramon. June had married in December of 1939. Frederick’s occupation is listed as drugless physician private practice.

Frederick’s 1942 WWII Military Draft Registration card lists the address of his business as 629 Fernwell Bldg in Spokane.

Frederick Vivon Armstrong died in 1961, at the age of 75/76.  He is buried in Fairmount Memorial Park in Spokane.

Mary Kate (Katherine Mary) Armstrong died in 1969, at the age of 78/79.  She is buried with Frederick in Fairmount Memorial Park.
