Welcome!  If this is your first visit to our blog, please read our Intro post here.  To date we have written posts about all known members of the first, second, and third generations of descendants of William Loney of Co Longford, Ireland, their spouses, and their spouses’ families.

If you are looking for information on someone in particular, you can use the “Search” feature in the upper right hand corner of this page.

We hope that the information you find here will be helpful to you in your genealogical research, lead you to an “aha” moment, or help you find a missing ancestor or branch of your family tree.  And, we have loved hearing from everyone who has contacted us.

While we make every effort to ensure that what we post is accurate (based on source documents or “reliable” family information), we would be silly to think that we haven’t made any mistakes.  If you run across one, please, please, please let us know so we can correct it.

If you are planning a trip to Ireland, visit our section on What to do in Ireland.  It provides a brief overview of where you might go and what you might do if you are interested in genealogical research on the Loney Family.

Finally, we remain forever optimistic that someone out there will contact us because they have old Loney family photos to share.  We would be especially thrilled to have one of William, Charles, John or Robert Loney or their sister, Ann Loney Cunningham. We are waiting to hear from you!

In previous posts we’ve written about Alexander MacKenzie Cole and his family.  You can read those posts here and here and here.  For additional posts mentioning Alexander, use the Search function in the upper right-hand corner of this blog.

We recently ran across this article providing a little insight about how Alexander and his family might have spent some of their leisure time.

The Spokane Press – Tuesday, Jul 19, 1910 – Spokane, WA – Vol:8 – Page: 6

The wording “broken up camp” might lead us to believe that they had good old tent camping.  However, Newman Lake, like many other area lakes, was a resort destination in the early 20th century. Excursion trains from Spokane use to run to Moab, where busses and stages took passengers three miles to the lake.  At one time there were four hotels, each one doing a brisk business. There were rental boats, beaches and fishing (the result of locals hand-carrying fish from both Liberty Lake and from hatchery stores that arrived by train). It is possible that the Coles stayed in one of the earlier built resort hotels.

You can read more about the history of Newman Lake here.

We really liked this newspaper clipping we found about Samuel Loney and hope you will too.

The Evening Statesman – Saturday, Nov 30, 1907 – Walla Walla, WA

Samuel Kasooth Bell Loney started in the wood and coal business in 1892, first as agent for the Roslyn Mining Company, and afterward on his own account.  You can read more about Samuel here and more about his coal adventures here and here.
